The invention concerns an internal combustion engine which comprises at least two opposite working cylinders between which a boost cylinder is disposed. The working cylinders accommodate reciprocating working pistons which are rigidly connected to a boost piston which moves in a reciprocating manner in the boost cylinder and divides the latter into two boost cylinder chambers. The internal combustion engine further comprises an output shaft, driven by a crank mechanism, and a valve system for the intake and discharge of fresh gas and exhaust gas, respectively. The valve system is formed by at least one roller valve (13, 14) and, per working cylinder (1, 2, 3, 4), at least one each of a pneumatic fresh gas valve (19, 20, 21, 22) and an exhaust gas or flush gas valve (15, 16, 17, 18). The compressed fresh gas, which passes through the roller valve (13, 14) in a timed manner adapted to the movements of the working pistons (5, 6, 7, 8) via the fresh gas lines (23, 24) to the pneumatic fresh gas valve (19, 20, 21, 22) and exhaust or flush gas valves (15, 16, 17, 18), opens the latter owing to its pressure and flows into the combustion chambers of the working cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4).
