<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery controller of a hybrid vehicle in which charge/discharge is controlled depending on the operating conditions. <P>SOLUTION: The battery controller of a hybrid vehicle comprising a power generating unit consisting of an engine 1, a generator 2, and a drive motor 4, and an energy storage unit 3 provided with batteries comprises first decision means (S503, S509) for making a decision whether the battery voltage of the energy storage unit 3 is lower than a first comparison voltage or not, means (S505, S511) for limiting power discharge from the energy storage unit 3 if the battery voltage is lower than the first comparison voltage, and a means (S501) for detecting whether the engine 1 is under starting operation through the generator 2 or not.
