In the method according to the invention, use is made of a device for measuring the thickness of a damp coating, e.g. a coat of paint on a substrate, a part of the device being a support which has two feet whose ends can be pressed onto the substrate through the damp coating. Built into the support is a probe or a sensor which can be adjusted with respect to the support. The respective position of the sensor can be read off on a scale. The sensor has a transparent or translucent free end, so that the point at which the sensor is brought into contact with the damp coating can be observed. In the method, calibration is carried out in such a way that the device is placed onto a surface which is not provided with a coating and which has the same shape as the surface bearing the coating; the result is to avoid wear of the device as well as errors ascribable to the curvature of the surface.
