Device for measuring the axial traction and compressive forces applied to a rod (1). A ring (10) carries at least one sensor (15). Another ring (11), parallel to said ring (10) acts as a magnetic target. The rings are formed by two separable, substantially semi-circular halves. Measuring is effected by estimating the width of the air gap (12) between the rings (10 and 11). The sensors (15) can be of the magnetic reluctance type. Application: for measuring forces applied on the sliding rods of some safety valves.
