The invention relates to novel liquid-crystalline tercyclohexyl compounds of the formula I in which R is an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by O, X is -CN, -COOR<1>, -COR<1>, or R<1>, and R<1> is an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, with the proviso that, if X = R<1>, at least one CH2 group in the alkyl group R has been replaced by O, to a process for the preparation of these compounds, and to liquid-crystalline dielectrics containing at least one component of the compounds of the formula I.
