In the winding of threads, bolsters are avoided by varying the speed of the traversing device repeatedly. However, at the same time, the ratio of the rotational speed of the bobbin to the traversing frequency is to remain constant. This presents mechanical problems in multi-station textile machines having a central drive for the bobbins and traversing devices. The traversing devices 9 and the bobbins are driven by a common drive 7, 8. The traversing devices 9 are connected in a rotationally flexible manner to the drive and can be braked via a continuously variable brake 12, in such a way that respectively predetermined ratios of the rotational speed of the bobbin and the traversing frequency can be set by varying the braking force. <IMAGE>
