In the underwater plasma cutting of aluminium on a water bench (17) whose water level is regulated by means of a displacement chamber (26) which contains air and is arranged in the water bench by injecting air into this chamber (26), detonatable hydrogen-oxygen gas mixture concentrations result. By the use of a gas which is inactive with respect to hydrogen, such as, for example, nitrogen or a rare gas, as a displacement medium instead of the air used hitherto and by retention of the quantity of granules, mainly arising during cutting, in a slag tank (16), the formation of detonating gas is prevented. <IMAGE>
