The four-stroke engine has an air scavenging arrangement. It has a first pipe line, in which during the open period of scavenger valve and outlet valve, scavenging pressurised air is supplied to the cylinder. During outlet valve closure, a mixture of over pressurised air and fuel is supplied via a throttle valve supplied to the same cylinder through a second pipe line. The cylinder head has a spark plug. Via the scavenger valve (5) the supply of scavenged air is directed to a central recess in the piston head (21). The seat of this valve has a chamfered edge. The seat of the inlet valve (6) is shaped so that fuel/air mixture is directed along cylinder bore.
