Sulfonylquinolines of formula (I) wherein R is aryl, or heteroaryl; R<1> is -NO2, -CN, -CO2R<3> wherein R<3> is H, alkyl, or aryl, -SO2R<3> wherein R<3> is as defined above, (a) wherein R<3> is as defined above, or (b) wherein R<3> is as defined above; R<2> is -NH2, -OH, or -SH; as well as methods for the preparation and pharmaceutical composition of same, which are useful as central nervous system agents and are particularly useful as antiobesity agents and for the treatment of hypertension.
