PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thread cutter which can cut the cutting end of a remaining upper thread in a stable state after upper and lower threads are cut upon completion of a sewing work. SOLUTION: The thread cutter for the sewing machine for cutting the upper and lower threads upon completion of the sewing work and cutting the cutting end of the remaining upper thread comprises a thread engaging part 10a for engaging an upper thread 2 and a cutting edge part 10b formed in the periphery thereof, a thread catching knife 10 moving forward and backward between a stand-by position and a needle thread catching position in which the thread engaging part corresponds to a needle dropping position and a thread cutting knife 11 moving forward and backward between an initial position and a cutting position exceeding the needle thread catching position to cut the thread in cooperation with the thread catching knife 10. When the cutting end of the remaining upper thread is cut, the thread catching knife 100 moves forward to the needle thread catching position before a sewing machine needle 1 is lowered below a needle plate. After the sewing machine needle 1 is raised on the needle plate, the thread cutting knife 11 moves forward to the cutting position.
