PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy by preventing the generation of excessive line pressure, while improving the belt strength durability. SOLUTION: In this belt type continuously variable transmission wherein a torque ratioτis determined from a speed ratio e, an input torque Tat is estimated on the basis of the determined torque ratioτ, and oil pressure of a primary pulley and line pressure supplied to a secondary pulley are controlled on the basis of the estimated input torque Tat and a target gear change ratio, the torque ratioτis determined by using a map A when the speed ratio e is increased, and the torque ratioτis determined by using a map B created by offsetting the map A in the normal direction by e<SB>1</SB>when the speed ratio 3 is decreased.
