Canine probiotic bifidobacterium pseudolongum

According to the invention there is provided a strain of lactic acid bacteria of the species Bifidobacterium pseudolongum obtainable by isolation from resected and washed canine gastrointestinal tract having a probiotic activity in animals. Methods of use and compositions comprising the Bifidobacterium pseudolongum of the present invention are also provided.

1. A food composition comprising:
a biologically pure culture of strain Bifidobacterium pseudolongum AHC7, NCIMB 41199, or mutant strain thereof, wherein the strain has probiotic activity in a companion animal selected from a canine, a feline, a rabbit, a ferret, a horse, and a cow; and a component comprising protein, fat, and carbohydrate, wherein the food composition is in a form selected from a biscuit, a kibble, a yogurt, a gravy, and any combination thereof, and further wherein the Bifidobacterium pseudolongum strain survives and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of the companion animal.
