This ultrasonic observation apparatus 3 is provided with: a B-mode image generation unit 351 for generating a B-mode image; a mode selection information input unit 381 for receiving mode selection information; a boundary image compositing unit 361 for generating a boundary composite image by processing an ultrasonic image such that a plurality of divided regions divided by a mesh-like boundary are displayed on the ultrasonic image; a region selection information input unit 382 for receiving region selection information for selecting an arbitrary region of the B-mode image; and a region-of-interest setting unit 334 for setting a region of interest by calculation using a region-of-interest setting method preliminarily associated with the operation mode selected by the mode selection information on the basis of the arbitrary region selected by the region selection information. Thus, the ultrasonic observation apparatus is configured so that a region of interest appropriate for each operation mode can be selected by a simple action.
