A method of introducing ions into a mass spectrometer comprises ionising a sample using a continuous ion source e.g. electrospray ionisation, transporting the ions in a first gas 2 through a passageway 3 into an inlet 5 of a mass spectrometer, introducing a second auxiliary gas 7 into the inlet, and controlling the flow rate of the second gas so as to control the flow rate of the first gas through the passageway. A heated zone 4 for desolvating ions may be provided, and the flow rate of the second gas may be optimised for the desolvation of ions in the first gas, e.g. by changing the residence time of the ions in the passageway. The second gas may cause the flow of the first gas to be stationary or reversed, and the flow may be laminar or turbulent. The inlet may be sealed such that the only the first and second gases flow into the inlet. |
