PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently clean a transfer member.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes an image carrier on which a developer image is formed, a transfer member which transfers the developer image to a recording medium in a transfer nip part where the transfer member comes into contact with the image carrier, cleaning means which cleans the transfer member by the application of a voltage, and control means which controls the cleaning means, so that when, in a developer adhering to the transfer member, the amount of the developer charged to a negative polarity is larger than that of the developer charged to a positive polarity, a first voltage having the negative polarity is applied to the transfer member and then, a second voltage having the positive polarity is applied to the transfer member and when the amount of the developer charged to the positive polarity is larger than that of the developer charged to the negative polarity, a third voltage having the positive polarity is applied to the transfer member and then, a fourth voltage having the negative polarity is applied to the transfer member.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5 |
