Provided are a high strength magnesium alloy, and a manufacturing method thereof. According to the present invention, the magnesium alloy comprises: 8.0-9.5 wt% of Al; 0.7-2.3 wt% of Zn; 0.5-3.0 wt% of at least one selected between Y and misch metal; and the remaining consisting of Mg. The magnesium alloy may additionally and selectively comprise: 3.5-6.5 wt% of Sn. The magnesium alloy of the present invention has sufficient strength as an Mg-Al alloy comprising a large quantity of Al, and is capable of mechanical processing such as extrusion or the like.
