Sealing elements (52,54) defining a longitudinal axis (26) have an opening of variable diameter transversely oriented or substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. An instrument can be guided through the sealing elements. An annular closed flexible wall has first and second inherently closed edges. The first edge limits the opening. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) A surgical seal; (2) A surgical sealing system for inserting surgical instruments into human or animal bodies.
