A method of refrigerant management and a refrigerant management system in an evaporator of a HVAC chiller comprises causing / delivering a refrigerant into a volume of the evaporator, displacing a portion 30 of the volume with a spacer 32 in a lower portion of the evaporator to prevent refrigerant from residing in the portion of the volume the spacer resides, wetting outer surfaces of tubes 36 with the refrigerant and evaporating the refrigerant by process fluid travelling through the tubes and releasing the evaporated refrigerant from the evaporator. The displacement may be an array of a plurality of spacers and may comprise of a plurality of baffles. The baffles may have though holes through which the tubes are inserted and may be of a larger diameter than the tubes thereby defining a space (64, fig 6) therebetween. Projections (66) may extend from the inner diameter of the holes preventing the tubes contacting the holes. |
