administering to the patient a diagnostically effective amount of an isotopically-labeled tyrosine and/or an isotopically-labeled p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid; collecting one or more samples from the patient; and determining the amount of isotopically-labeled carbon dioxide and/or an isotopically-labeled para-cresol in said samples; said amount indicating the presence or absence of the bacterial infection in the patient. |
