The invention relates to methods and means for ecologically monitoring the environment by remotely monitoring the real-time cardiological activity of invertebrate animals having a hard external covering. The inventive method consists in placing a testable invertebrate animal in a controllable medium, in irradiating said animal with infrared optical radiation with the aid of a transmitting optical fibre, the output end face of which is placed on the hard external covering thereof in the area of the heart, and an optical radiation source, which is optically connected to the input end face of the transmitting optical fibre, in receiving the reflected optical radiation with the aid of a receiving optical fibre, the input end face of which is placed on the hard external covering of the testable invertebrate animal in the area of the heart thereof and in converting said optical radiation into an electric signal with the aid of an optical radiation receiver optically connected to the output end face of the receiving optical fibre.
