PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of making judgment as to whether or not a roll of paper is placed such that the front and rear faces thereof are correctly set. SOLUTION: After a roll of paper is loaded to a roll set shaft, the tip portion of the roll of paper is wound around a roll winding shaft by automatic feeding. After the paper is wound little and the paper becomes in a stable condition, a checkmark adapted to be used for determination of the front or rear face of the paper is detected. This printer is so constituted that when the checkmark is correctly detected, it is determined that the roll of paper is correctly set, and when it is not, it is determined that the roll of paper is not correctly set.
