PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector for maintaining image quality of projection images, even when the position of an arc is varied, and to provide a method of controlling the projector. SOLUTION: The projector 1 comprises a lighting device 5 for lighting a light source device 411, by supplying a current by prescribed electric power to the light source device 411; an imaging device 6 for outputting imaging information by imaging image light enlarged and projected by a projection optical system 45; and a control device 7 for driving and controlling the lighting device 5 and the imaging device 6. The control device 7 comprises an uneveness determination processing part 74 for determining whether color irregularity occurs on image light, on the basis of imaging information; and a current variation control part 761 for carrying out current variation control to temporarily increase the current supplied to the light source device 411, by driving and controlling the lighting device 5 after determining that the color irregularity is occurring in the uneveness determination processing part 74.
