<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easily understandable interface for layout of character strings and ruled lines when preparing a document or the like containing character strings and ruled lines, so as to increase the convenience of processing the documents, particularly to make clear the relationship between character strings and ruled lines when the size of characters forming the character strings can be set freely. <P>SOLUTION: If a ruled line is inserted in a line with a preset line attribute such as right justification or equal spacing or if an existing ruled line is deleted, the line attribute is initialized for areas divided by the ruled line or for areas integrated by the deletion of the ruled line, and spaces are computed and inserted so as not to change the positions of the character strings determined by tabs and indents.
