PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device and an image display method capable of adding an image switching effect representing purposes or features of the whole image to preferably enhance performance effects such as amazement, presence feelings and the like when a plurality of images are reproduced sequentially.

SOLUTION: An image display device has: an image storing section 61 storing a plurality of photographed images; a subject distance map storing section 62 storing a subject distance for each pixel at the time when at least the image is displayed on a screen while associating with each image; an image display section 63 reading out the image from the image storing section 61 to display the image on the screen sequentially; and an image switching effect generator 64 generating an image switching effect that is used when the image display section 63 switches over from a current display image to a next display image. The image switching effect generator 64 generates a distance effect that is the image switching effect based on the subject distance for each pixel which is stored in the subject distance map storing section 62.
