[Also in Division G3H] In a process for making flake or knop yarn from artificial or synthetic polymer material, the material is conveyed to a spinneret by means of an adjustable flow pump driven by an hydraulic motor, the drive to the motor being varied by photo-electrically generated control pulses which produce pressure pulses in an hydraulic system. The control pulses may be generated by projecting a filmed programme on to a photo-electric cell. The filmed programme may be drawn or derived from impulses originating from radioactive sources, images of the pulses being formed on the film as a black- and-white code. The film may contain several tracks, and may be provided with additional markings which initiate pulses in additional photo-electric cells for reversing, moving laterally or varying the speed of the film. In one embodiment, an hydraulic system for driving the spinning pumps consists of circulation systems 11, 12 and oil reservoir 10. Pump 13 circulates oil in system 11 through electromagnetic valve 17 which is open when no current flows. Amplified pulses from electrical circuit 9 and derived by photo-electric means, close valve 17 at irregular intervals, causing oil to flow through non-return valve 21 into system 12 supplied by pump 18. The momentarily increased flow in this system causes hydraulic motor 25 and thus the spinning pumps to which it is connected to be driven at increased speed, thus producing a flake or knob in the yarn being spun. The basic denier of the yarn is adjusted by the speed of pump 18, the flake denier being adjusted by means of alteration of delivery of pump 13.
