Disclosed is the use of inhibitors of β-catenin expression or activity or modulators downregulating β-catenin expression or activity for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases or disorders and their use in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and disorders, such as heart failure syndrome. The use of those agents resulted in particular in cardiomyocyte differentiation of endogenous cardiac stem cells.

1. A method for differentiating resident cardiac precursor cells comprising:
administering to a subject in need thereof comprising said resident cardiac precursor cells, an inhibitor of β-catenin expression or activity or a modulator downregulating β-catenin expression or activity in an β-catenin expression or activity downregulating effective amount, wherein the administration is targeted towards cardiac cells or tissues, and wherein said administration results in enhanced differentiation of said resident cardiac precursor cells and subsequent regeneration of cardiac tissue.
