An alternator-starter assembly for an internal combustion engine having a crankshaft and a drive member operatively connected to the crankshaft. The alternator-starter assembly includes an electric machine, a transmission assembly, and a controller. The transmission assembly includes a first drive shaft operatively connected to the rotor, a second drive shaft operatively connected to the drive member, and a gear assembly operatively connected to the first drive shaft and the second drive shaft.
