1. A method for diagnosing the presence or absence of a bacterial infection in the lungs of a patient comprising:
administering an effective amount of an isotopically-labeled citrulline, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, to the lungs of the patient; collecting one or more breath, urine, whole blood, plasma, or serum samples from the patient; and analyzing the one or more samples to determine the amount of isotopically labeled carbon dioxide, isotopically labeled ammonia, or a mixture thereof in said samples; said amount indicating the presence or absence of the bacterial infection. |
