721,759. Record-controlled printing machines. POWERS-SAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. Nov. 14, 1952 [Jan. 2, 1952], No. 197/52. Class 100 (4). Type-selecting mechanism.-In a record-controlled printing machine the type members (type bars, type sector or type wheels) are selectively moved into forty positions in addition to a stationary position by a selector member 10 which is arrested in desired position by a series of ten stops 20, 21 reciprocating through a longitudinally movable guide 31. The guide 31 is movable into three positions, giving three positions to each stop 20, 21, determined by means of three control slides 42, 48, 49. The fourth position of the guide 31 is determined by the depression of the rear part 21 only of the stops 20, 21. If a numeral code on the record is sensed, one of the nine numeral plungers 33 is operated and by means of Bowden cables 34 an interposer 27 is depressed projecting one of the stops 20, 21 into the path of a projection 15 on the guide 31 which is moved to the right by springs 14 anchored to a restoring bail 12. Since a numeral code has no second code the control stops 42, 48, 49 remain unmoved with stop 42 engaging a stop 47 on the guide and movement is prevented. When a letter, or other two code record is sensed an additional plunger 33a is operated and, according to which plunger is moved, operates (a) a control stop 48 and by means of parts 54-67 withdraws stop 42; (b) a fourth control slide 50, which by means of projections 78, 79 depresses the control stop 48, and in addition rocks a lever 70 and moves a slide 72 so that the part 20 of the stop is prevented from downward movement or (c) the control stop 49 and also, by parts 63-67, withdraws stop 42. The guide 31 moves to the right by the pull of springs 59 attached to a retain bail 58. The extreme stop 20, 21 positions a zero. Printing of zeros.-The printing of zeros to the right of a particular significant figure may be effected by the operation of control levers 80. These position arms 85 and pivotallyattached plates 88 so that they are located between a series of latches 16, one for each column and which are moved, to release the selector member 10, whenever a stop in that column is operated. The release operation of the latches 16 by the stops 20 is effected by pins 96 engaging a trip bar 97 and lever 100. A projection 94 on a moved latch 16 moves the plate 88 into the path of a bail 91 which raises the plate 88 and its arm 85 which in turn, by means of a lug 85a engages a lateral extension 86 on the next lower denominational arm 85 to release its latch 16 and so allows its selector member 10 to travel to the end stop 20, 21 and move a zero into printing position. Suppression of printing.-A series of levers 105 may be operated to shift a stop 111 into the path of a notch 112 on the selector member 10 so preventing its selective travel whether or not a stop 20, 21 has been operated.
