A piston system 50, 80 is provided. The piston system comprises: a piston 50 having a crown 52 and a substantially cylindrically shaped skirt 70. A bridge 80 is coupled to a piston skirt 70 at the end of the piston 50 away from the piston crown 52. The bridge structure 80 includes: a central support structure 82, 86, a first projection 90 extending outwardly from the central support structure 82, 86, in a first radial direction, and a second projection 92 extending outwardly from the central support structure 82, 86, in a second radial direction. The central support structure is substantially hollow with a series of internal braces 100 to yield a lightweight piston. |
