An alarm device comprises a portable unit 10 and a base unit (20 fig. 3). The portable unit includes a fingerprint sensor 14, transmitter and battery. The base unit includes a receiver to receive signals from the portable unit, a data communication means to send data to a remote station or network and a power connection to charge the battery of the portable unit, when docked, through connection 18. In the event of an emergency, a user activates the device by pressing on compliant surface 34 of the portable unit. Fingerprint recognition may be performed authenticating the user which enables an emergency alert to be placed to an external agency or carer. Voice communication may be enabled on the device. The portable unit may contain a SIM card. A GPS positioning means may also be provided. The status of the device may be indicated by an LED array. |
