摘要 |
Solid ethylene polymers are sulphochlorinated in one or more stages by means of sulphuryl chloride, actinic light, an activator for the photochemical sulpho-chlorination reaction and a chlorination catalyst, the polymer being dissolved or suspended in a chlorinated solvent. The ethylene polymer may be polyethylene of high density made by the low-pressure polymerization process, using, for example, a catalyst comprising a hexavalent chromium compound or tin tetrabutyl, titanium tetrachloride and aluminium chloride. The chlorination catalyst is of the free-radical type and may be benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, cumene hydroperoxide, azo-di-isobutyronitrile or azo-bis-dimethylvaleronitrile. The actinic light is preferably rich in ultra-violet radiation and the activator is a cyclic organic base containing at least one atom of nitrogen in the nucleus, e.g. pyridine, quinoline, mercaptothiazoline or morpholine. Specifications 542,414, 815,234 and U.S.A. Specification 2,405,971 are referred to.
