[Also in Division B5K] In a method of produc ing a container of thermo plastic material, two hollow members, each of which is flanged at an open end thereof, are sealed together by heating and simultaneously deforming the flanges whilst positioned in faceto-face contact with each other, pressure being maintained within said members during the sealing operation to prevent collapse of the walls of the container. Two moulded thermoplastic container halves 2, 3 having flanged portions 6, 11 are placed in opposed die halves 12, 13 and the die halves closed to bring the flanges into contact in which position heat is supplied by electrical ring heaters 16, 24 located at the extremities of the die halves 12, 13 tc weld the flanges together Relative movement between the die halves 12, 13 and associated shafts 19, 28 which locate and support the ends of the container halves 2, 3 then causes the welded flange to be deformed to a position in which it lies adjacent to the wall 4 of the lower half container 2. The shaft 28 supplies compressed air or similar fluid to the container through an opening 9 in the upper container half 3 to support the container walls during the welding and deforming operations. The die halves 12, 13 finally separate to allow removal of the completed container, the deformed flange of which serves as a reinforcing rim which surrounds the central area thereof. A machine is described (Figs 1-6) in which a plurality of die units are mounted around the periphery of a rotating carrier and movements of the die parts, shafts and the supply and exhausting of the compressed air are controlled and co-ordinated by annular cam tracks mounted on the machine frame. Automatic feed and discharge means may be provided so that each die assembly is loaded at a loading station with the moulded container halves, passes around the machine, and discharges a completed container at an unloading station. |
