The device (1) has two shifting rails (6, 7) arranged adjacent to each other and displaceable in a lateral direction. The rails comprise intervention paths (10-12, 19-21) and shift edges (13-18, 22-27). Operating elements (2-5) rest against the shift edges of the rails during shifting of the operating elements in a direction of the rails such that a lateral position of the rails is displaceable or not displaceable, and the operating elements are insertable into the intervention paths of the rails. The operating elements are arranged adjacent to each other. The operating elements are designed as projections, cams or lugs.
