PURPOSE: An optical network system and a method which controls the optical network system are provided to make a symmetric terminal and an asymmetric terminal coexist. CONSTITUTION: An optical base station (110) controls a passive optical network in which one or more symmetric optical subscriber terminals (120) and one or more asymmetric terminals (130) coexist. The optical base station commonly uses one optical line terminal (OLT) as a transceiver of the one or more symmetric optical subscriber terminals and the one or more asymmetric terminals. In case one or more output signals which are outputted from a physical medium attachment (PMA) are an asymmetric structure, the optical base station uses at least one of the one or more output signals.
