PURPOSE: A tool rest for a CNC lathe and a driving method thereof are provided to position the tool rest at the predetermined position by transferring as the first or second transfer amount for the normal operation and to correctly operate. CONSTITUTION: A tool rest (100) for a CNC lathe comprises a control unit (130) and a transfer unit (160). The control unit measures the actual coordinate value in case the final position of the tool rest is not in the predetermined position. The control unit calculates one or more coordinate value among the first short distance coordinate value in the first direction or the second short distance coordinate value in the second direction based on the actual coordinate value and calculates the first transfer amount or the second transfer amount through the difference with the actual coordinate value. The transfer unit transfers the tool rest to the first transfer amount with respect to the first direction or the second transfer amount with respect to the second direction according to a control signal of the control unit.
