938,412. Coated fabrics; laminates. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Jan. 20, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1959], No. 2049/60. Class 140. A surface covering material having an embossed appearance comprises a backing and a decorative wearing surface affixed thereto comprising fused particles of polymerized vinyl chloride resin having a specific viscosity of from 0.1 to 0.6, at least 5% by weight, e.g. 5 to 10% by weight, of the particles having a specific viscosity different from that of the balance of the particles by at least 0.12. The material may be formed by depositing the particles on to the backing which may be coated with an adhesive, e.g. an acrylic adhesive and subjecting the particles to heat and pressure whereby said particles fuse together to form a coherent decorative wearing surface affixed to said backing, having an embossed appearance. The polymerized vinyl chloride resin may comprise polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer which may comprise a mixture of copolymers having differing specific viscosities and containing different amounts of vinyl acetate therein, a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, or a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer. Suitable backings include burlap, beater saturated felted sheets, felted sheets after-saturated with asphalt or a suitable resin, and asbestos sheets. The surface covering material may be produced by forming a sheet of the particles by calendering and laminating the sheet to the backing with or without the aid of an adhesive. The particles may be of different shapes and particles of different specific viscosities may be deposited in areas to form a patterned surface. Specification 938,411 is referred to. |
