PURPOSE: A face recognition device and a method thereof are provided to filter an image which is unsuitable for face recognition and to use images in which face recognition suitability is the highest, thereby improving face recognition performance. CONSTITUTION: A face detection unit(110) detects a face area from an input image. A normalization unit(120) normalizes an image of the face area. A suitability determination unit(130) restores the image of the face area by using a feature vector and calculates a restoring error from the image of the face area and the restoring image. The suitability determination unit calculates face recognition suitability for the image of the face area by using the restoring error. A face recognizing unit(150) recognizes a face by using the image of the face area in which the face recognition suitability is higher than a threshold value.
