<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation apparatus and observation method allowing improvement in the resolution and sharpness of information about a boundary at which the medium in the interior of an observed object changes, obtained by observation. <P>SOLUTION: An output unit 11 emits coherent irradiation light 31a that induces a dipole moment in an induction factor contained in an observed object 2. At least a portion of the wavelength range of the irradiation light 31a and at least a portion of the absorption wavelength range over which the induction factor absorbs light overlap. A laser unit generates femtosecond pulse laser light having a wavelength range including the wavelength range of the irradiation light.
