The invention relates to a method for increasing the immunity of a fire detector (1) to false alarms. The invention further relates to a fire detector (1). In order to reduce the cross-sensitivity of a fire detector (1), an additional potential change (14) in the form of a square-wave voltage is impressed at a gate of a gas-sensitive field-effect transistor (4) according to the invention, which additional potential change results in a change of the sensor signal (13), wherein at least one moisture-dependent quantity of said signal change (13) is evaluated and the fire detector (1) is put into a malfunction mode in order to avoid a false alarm caused by moisture if a certain evaluation result is present.
