An electric arc furnace for melting scrap iron comprises a cylindrical wall 5 with a slag taphole 10 and a metal taphole 11 incorporating a discharge syphon, three electrodes 8b, 8c supported by beams 9b, 9c, and an arcuate charging hopper 3 defined by inner wall 4 and outer wall 12 the inner wall 4 terminating above the hearth 6 and defining an opening 20 through which radiation from the electrodes and the furnace interior melts the scrap in said hopper. The wall 4 has cooling boxes 17 with conduits 18 supplying cooling fluid e.g. water or air. A modification (Fig. 3) has two oppositely disposed arcuate charging hoppers and another modification (Figs. 4 and 5) has a rectangular furnace both associated with three electrodes in line between two lateral charging hoppers fed by conveyer belts. A final modification (Fig. 6) has six electrodes in line between two lateral charging hoppers.</p> |
