The solenoid is supplied in a closure mode and a maintenance mode. The current is reduced in maintenance mode. A voltage corresponding to the supply voltage to the starter motor is measured, and when this voltage falls in response to closure of the starter solenoid, the current supply is reduced to maintenance mode level for a predetermined time.
