A rowing machine with a frame, a footplate 5, a sliding sea 4, an oar handle 6, a rowlock 15, a rigger 7 to hold the rowlock 15, a flywheel 8 to simulate drag, MEMS gyroscopes or potentiometers to measure the angle that the oar handle 6 makes in 3 planes about its rowlock 15, a torque transducer to measure torque applied through the rowlock 15, a magnetic clutch to control the percentage of torque transmitted between the oar 6 and flywheel 8, a limited slip differential and a microprocessor with a display which monitors inputs from the transducer and gyroscope or potentiometer and uses the information to control the magnetic clutch and provide feedback on performance and technique. A seat for a disabled person may be provided and the frame may be arranged to pivot about its longitudinal axis using an actuator which responds to oar movement. The oar handles may also be counterbalanced.
