<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which is capable of capturing a high-resolution image from a low-resolution motion picture through simple processing, and an image generation method or the like. <P>SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus comprises an image capturing section, an added image generating section, a compression processing section, an expansion processing section, an estimate arithmetic section, and an image output section. The added image generating section successively pixel-shifts an addition unit in a captured image fx, and acquires added images A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>to A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>by weight-adding pixel values included in the addition unit. The compression processing section determines a mean of the added images A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>to A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>as a mean image M, determines a differential between the mean image M and an added image A<SB POS="POST">m</SB>as a differential image D<SB POS="POST">m</SB>, and compresses the determined mean image M and the differential image D<SB POS="POST">m</SB>. The expansion processing section expands the compressed mean image M and differential image D<SB POS="POST">m</SB>and determines the added images A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>to A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>. The estimate arithmetic section estimates a pixel value v<SB POS="POST">ij</SB>of the captured image fx on the basis of the added images A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>to A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>.
