A system and method for hyperspectral image processing receives 202 partial hyperspectral image data representing a portion of a complete hyperspectral image. The method computes 204 estimated mean and covariance values for the partial hyperspectral image data, and executes a hyperspectral image processing algorithm 206A, 206B, such as target or anomaly detection, using the estimated mean and covariance values as estimates of global mean and covariance values for the complete hyperspectral image. The mean and covariance can be updated when further partial hyperspectral image data is received by computing new estimated mean and covariance as an average between the mean and covariance of the further partial hyperspectral image and previously computed mean and covariance. The method reduces data storage requirements because there is no need to store any previous image data, simply storing the mean and covariance is enough. The image may be built up by scanning a sensor across a scene, e.g. using the motion of an aircraft to scan across a landscape. |
