The method comprises administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising: a) a fragment of human thrombomodulin in a therapeutically effective amount; and b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; wherein the fragment comprises the amino acids Ala242 to Ser515 of SEQ ID NO: 2.
