A yarn tensioning device for a hand-operated machine comprises two plates 4, 13 between which the yarn passes to an eye 28 on the end of a spring arm 25. The plate 13 is pressed against the yarn and the other plate 4 by a spring 19 to restrict the passage of the yarn thereby causing tension to be imposed in it as it passes to the machine. A tail 26 of the arm 25 engages the spring 19 and in the event of undue tension whereby the arm is pulled down, the tail urges the spring 19 away from the plate 13 so that the restriction to the passage of yarn is partly or wholly removed. To assist in guiding the yarn between the plates, the plate 13 is slightly concaved throughout its length so as to provide a shallow channel through which the yarn passes, and the upper portion of the plate 4, which is bent back on itself, as is also the bottom portion to enable it to be clipped on to the casing of the device as shown at 3, is provided with two upturned edges 8. The bottom of the casing is slotted to enable a yarn to be inserted and one side wall is recessed to enable the yarn to be engaged between the plates. |
