Amidines of the formula or an acid addition salt thereof wherein R and R1 are the same and each is an alkyl group, R11 is an alkyl group having together with R or R1 a sum of at least 9 carbon atoms and R, R1 and R11 have a sum total of not more than 19 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting a nitrile of the formula with a halomagnesium derivative of a secondary amine RR1NH and subsequently hydrolysing the product. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise an amidine of the invention together with a therapeutically acceptable carrier therefor. The compositions, which are anthelmintics, are formulated for oral ingestion and include feed supplements.
