<p>An electrochemical apparatus is described, comprising: an electrochemical chamber; with at least one cathode 4 and at least one anode 3. The anode(s) 3 comprises a consumable surface for contact with liquid in the chamber, whereby, upon application of a potential difference across the cathode(s) 4 and anode(s) 3, the consumable surface in contact with liquid in the chamber dissolves in the liquid. The apparatus further comprises a protective electrode where said electrode is connectable to the cathode(s) 4 and/or anode(s) 3 in the chamber via a source of direct current 6, such that electron flow takes place. The electron flow moves from the protective electrode 1 to the cathode(s) 4 and/or anode(s) 4 in the chamber, where said protective electrode 1 may be formed from a different material to the cathode(s) or anode(s) in the chamber. The apparatus may be used to effect electro coagulation to purify water.</p> |
