PURPOSE: A washing machine and control method thereof capable of prevent the damage of clothes by reducing the occurrence of a foreign material. CONSTITUTION: A drum(130) is included in the inside of a cabinet. The drum is rotated around a shaft. The upper and lower penetration rate is changed according to a predetermined height. The upper penetration rate is higher than the lower penetration rate. The penetration rate is gradually changed by the predetermined height.
